What Doh Kill, Does Fatten!

Overcoming Adversity: Lessons from Hanuman Ji & a Donkey in a Well.

Life is filled with challenges that can sometimes feel insurmountable, like falling into a deep hole with no way out. However, adversity can become an opportunity for growth and strength. Two timeless stories—one from folklore and the other from the revered epic, the Ramayan—teach us the importance of perseverance, wisdom, effort, and resilience in overcoming life’s difficulties.

The Donkey in the Well: Shaking Off the Dirt and Stepping Up.

One day, a farmer’s donkey fell into a well. The terrified animal cried out, but after some time, the farmer decided the donkey was old and that the well needed to be covered anyway. Rather than rescuing the animal, he called his neighbours to help bury it.

As dirt poured onto the donkey’s back, he initially panicked. Then something remarkable happened. Instead of giving up, the donkey began to shake off the dirt and step up—one step at a time. With each shovel of dirt, he actively used it as a stepping stone to rise higher. Eventually, the donkey stepped out of the well, free and unharmed.

The lesson is clear: Life will inevitably throw challenges our way, just as the farmer shovelled dirt onto the donkey, life sometimes buries us with troubles. But the key is not to simply endure but to act. Like the donkey, we must shake off our burdens and take proactive steps to move forward. Every difficulty can become an opportunity for growth when we use it as a stepping stone. Even the deepest wells can be overcome with persistence and action.

Hanuman’s Perseverance: Overcoming the Impossible with Wisdom, Effort, and Faith.

In the Ramayan, Hanuman exemplifies resilience in his quest to find Sita, who had been abducted by Ravana. Faced with countless obstacles, including the vast ocean separating him from Lanka, Hanuman did not see the challenge as insurmountable. With unwavering faith in Lord Rama, he combined wisdom with immense effort. Rather than waiting for a miracle, he strategically planned and executed his leap across the ocean.

Later, in Lanka, Hanuman was captured and brought before Ravana. Bound in chains and threatened with death, he did not lose hope. Instead, he used his intelligence and strength to break free. His quick thinking and strategic actions allowed him to out-manoeuvre Ravana’s forces and continue his mission.

Hanuman’s journey teaches us that no matter how daunting our challenges seem, we must face them with faith, wisdom, and effort. Like the donkey in the well, every setback can be a stepping stone if we actively work towards overcoming it. Hanuman’s perseverance reminds us that obstacles are opportunities for growth when approached with a balanced combination of intellect, determination, and unwavering belief.

The Power of Resilience.

Both stories—the donkey in the well and Hanuman’s trials—offer valuable lessons for anyone facing difficulties. Life may throw dirt on us in the form of struggles, fears, and setbacks. At times, we may feel buried, but if we shake it off, apply our wisdom, put in the effort, and take the next step, we can rise above any challenge.

So, when life gets tough, don’t give up. Shake off the dirt, trust in your inner strength, use your wisdom, put in the effort, and take that next step. Just like Hanuman and the donkey, you too can overcome obstacles and find your path to a brighter future.

  2. This message inspired my family in various ways… each of us have our own unique cocktail of problems that we battle. For me, it reminded me to not just bear the problems but to use them as tools for growth and positive purpose.
While I enjoyed the “Donkey in the Well” story, the “Ah-Ha!” Moment was Hanuman using his tail on fire to destroy Lanka. He used his problems to his advantage!
Thank you for the reminder of the resilience of our spirit. 🙏🏽
